Unigames March Newsletter 2025
Unigames March 2025 Newsletter
Hello everyone! We're truly in the thick of semester one by now and Unigames has really been feeling the busyness of the times. Over the course of the last month and a bit we have run or participated in 12 events, an average of 3 a week, always with more to come! We've also seen a large intake of freshers this semester and the clubroom is feeling livelier than ever.
Make sure to pay attention to our upcoming events, we have some exciting and important things coming up! On top of the list are Club Carnival, the April Ordinary General Meeting, our two upcoming Warhammer tournaments (a 1k and a 2k), the Tarkir: Dragonstorm Prerelease, our Blood on the Clocktower event, and our D20 One-shot Night. Pay attention as well to the relaunch of some of our long running events like WestMarche and our MtG Precon League!
We hope to see you around in the clubroom or at some of our events soon and wish you luck in your upcoming assessments. Take it easy and rest well!
Upcoming at Unigames
Club Carnival - Week 6, Tuesday 1st of April @ 12-2pm
In just a few days we will be participating in the UWA Club Carnival, where you can find us tabling in Guild Village between 12 and 2 pm! If you have yet to sign up as a Unigames member for 2025 this is a perfect opportunity to do so, and if you have any questions there will be committee members there to help and guide you. It's also a good time to sign up with our sister clubs UniSFA, UWAnime, UCC, UWA eSports, UWASCA and more!
One Page RPG One-shot Night - Week 6, Wednesday 2nd of April @ 4pm
Do you think RPG one-shots just take too damn long? Well look no further for an event that is short and sweet! One-Page RPG One-shot Night is a night where we crack open our books of one-page RPGs, with such hits as Big Mutherfuckin' Crab Truckers, (an RPG about being a big mutherfuckin' crab trucker), The Witch is Dead, and Everyone is John. Perfect for if you have an hour or two to spare and want to play some odd and interesting RPGs!
April Ordinary General Meeting - Week 6, Friday 4th of April @ 2pm
We recently had one of our Ordinary Committee Members resign, and so to fill the position we have decided to call an Ordinary General Meeting where we nominate and elect a new OCM. The OGM will be held at the Guild Council Room in Guild Village and shouldn't last more than an hour. Nominations are currently open on Facebook, we encourage you to self nominate if you think you would be suitable! As well, if you are unable to make the OGM, please consider sending in an absentee vote to Unigames secretary Nene.
To send in an absentee vote you must have been an Ordinary Financial Member for 42 days before April 4th, and to vote in the elections and be on committee you must be an Ordinary Financial Member (for no specified amount of time). If you're unsure whether you're an Ordinary Financial Member please reach out to any committee member to confirm!
1k Warhammer Tournament - Week 6, Saturday 5th of April @ 8:30am
The first in our two weeks of Warhammer tournaments is a 1k tournament on the 5th of April, hosted at the Giumelli Learning Studios in the UWA EZONE. The day will feature 3 games of 1000 point battle forged 40k games using, playing three preset missions chosen from the Pariah Nexus Tournament Companion. Tickets are still available for $25 so make sure to go here to purchase one! Cans of soft drink will be supplied on the day for participants.
Tarkir: Dragonstorm Prerelease - Week 6, Sunday 6th of April @ 11am
Our first prerelease of semester one is here! For those unaware, a prerelease is an event that takes place before the actual release of a new set in Magic: The Gathering. For the event, you buy a prerelease kit, open packs and make a deck using the cards you've just opened. After that you compete with each other using your newly made decks!
Entry is $55 and includes a prerelease kit of 6 play boosters, a foil rare or mythic rare, and a spindown d20, with the ability to win more packs depending on game results! With prizes to win and an accessible format for new players, if you are new to Magic, be sure to come along!
Collaborative Boardgames - Week 7, Tuesday 8th of April @ 5pm
We at Unigames HQ have found that a lot of boardgames seek to pit our valued members against each other, and so we are remedying this by introducing a boardgame night where they have to work together. Come along on Tuesday the 8th of April to play collaborative boardgames like Night Cage, The Crew, The Mind, Mysterium, and more!
2k Warhammer Tournament - Week 7, Saturday 12th of April @ 8am
Our second Warhammer tournament is a 2k tournament on the 12th of April, hosted at the Giumelli Learning Studios in the UWA EZONE. The day will feature 3 games of 2000 point battle forged 40k games using missions that will be announced closer to the day, pending mission rules releases. Tickets are available for $30, make sure to go here to purchase one! Like the other event, cans of soft drink will be supplied for participants.
Blood on the Clocktower Event - Week 7, Sunday 13th of April @ 1pm
Blood on the Clocktower is easily one of the favourite boardgames in Unigames, and so we have decided its time to run another event for it! There will be two games this time, one being Trouble Brewing and the other being Bad Moon Rising. This event is suitable for all experience levels, whether you've played BOTC before or are brand new. Reservations will be used for this event so make sure to look out for the advertising so you can sign up!
D20 One-shot Night - Week 8, 14th-20th of April
The number one question we get on O-Days and Club Carnivals: do you guys even run DnD? And the answer is well kind of. If you are one of our many freshers who joined thinking Unigames would be non-stop DnD look no further than D20 One-shot Night: An event that isn't exclusively DnD but has systems that are similar in many ways! Come along for games of Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, Starfinder, 13th Age, and all manner of other D20 based systems. Reservations will be used for this event as well so look out for it when the advertising is put out!
WestMarche Revival
For those who are unaware, WestMarche is an event Unigames has run once before, it is a public drop-in drop-out campaign ran by a bunch of GMs who work together to create a world that updates week by week (to make it feel like the campaign is passing in real time). Each one-shot played affects the world everyone is playing in, meaning that the Spire you play from the first one-shot to the last could be very different!
This time around the WestMarche system will most likely be Spire, a D10 system about about desperate revolutionary dark elves caught up in a secret war against the high elves, or aelfir, who rule the towering city of Spire. If you are interested please look out in the next few weeks for an expression of interest form for those who would like to participate as players!
Magic: the Gathering Precon League
After our previous successful MtG precon league we are gearing up to run a second one! Precon league is an event where participants begin with an unedited preconstructed commander deck and upgrade it each week within a set budget, before playing games with other precon leaguers over the course of 5 weeks, competing for points and potential prizes. There will also be a lot of fun challenges that you can work towards during the duration of precon league!
Entry will be $10, with prizing being done at the end of the event. The budget for each weekly upgrade will be $15, with the first week being the decks straight out of the box, with each round taking place in the clubroom each week.
At the moment there is a poll in our discord's announcements channel for what day the league should be held on, so if you're interested please go make your opinion known!
Fresher Campaigns
The semester one fresher campaign allocations were released just a few days before this newsletter was posted! For the freshers who signed up for allocations you will have either heard from your fresher GM by now or will hear from them soon. If you continue to not hear back please get in contact with Unigames fresher representative Jack to see if he can help you out!
Previous Events
You might be wondering what Unigames has been up to this last little while, so here's a quick summary of what's happened since the start of March!
Fresher Welcome - Week 1, Thursday 27th of February @ 4pm
This year's fresher welcome had a staggering attendance of about 80 people, so many that we had to bother the Guild multiple times to get more chairs and tables to supplement the loft and our clubroom! Pizza, boardgames and the pleasantness of finding new friends was well enjoyed.
AGM - Week 1, Friday 28th of February @ 1pm
We had our annual general meeting the day following our fresher welcome, with another large attendance of around 40-50 people. This was the meeting where we elected the committee we have now for 2025. It was very exciting to see so many freshers excited in committee positions, and we hope to see that again for next year!
RPG O'Day - Week 2, Tuesday 4th of March @ 2pm
We had a bunch of systems represented at RPG O'Day including Spire, Torchbearer, The Good Society and the Borg Family (Mork Borg, Orc Borg, etc). About 30 people came through to peruse some of Unigames' favourite systems and hopefully gained interest in some ones they hadn't heard of!
Variety One-shot Night - Week 2, Thursday 6th of March @ 4pm
Variety One-shot Night rounded out our RPG week with a high attendance of 43 players and 8 GMs! Games that were enjoyed were Monster of the Week, Mothership, DnD and Mausritter. Variety One-shot Night is always one of the most popular events of the year and we can't wait to run it again next year!
TCG O'Day - Week 3, Wednesday 12th of March @ 1pm
TCG O'Day started off our week of TCGs with some success, showcasing TCGs we play in the club like Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Flesh and Blood, MtG and Netrunner! This event spawned a very intense interest in Flesh and Blood within the club and lead right into Intro to Pokemon.
Intro to Pokemon - Week 3, Wednesday 12th of March @ 4pm
We have had a lot of interest in Pokemon this year, much more than in some recent years, and we decided to foster it with a very successful Intro to Pokemon! The new club decks were brought out and tested with both experienced and inexperienced players. This event was so successful that we are looking forward to running similar ones in the future, as well as hopefully starting up Pokemon tournaments within the club!
Intro to Magic: The Gathering - Week 3, Thursday 13th of March @ 1pm
We finished our TCG Week on Intro to MtG where we taught a bunch of freshers and people new to MtG how to play it! We got to utilise our new welcome decks that we got from Tactics a couple of weeks before the event, and they were a very useful teaching tool. Intro to MtG is almost certainly why we had such high attendance at our SNoM 10 days later, and we look forward to fostering our new Magic the Gatherers with our future prerelease, precon league, and more!
Intro to Wargaming - Week 4, Tuesday 18th of March @ 5pm
Intro to Wargaming was on the Tuesday night before PROSH which made it a bit of a funky evening, but wargaming was well and truly introed. Participants played or had games like Blood Bowl, Kill Team, and Root demonstrated for them. Wargaming has seen a big boom in interest as of recent so we hope this continues into 2025!
PROSH - Week 4, Wednesday 19th of March
The theme for PROSH at large this year was 'PROSH-BUSTER'. Y'know, like blockbusters? Unigames and UniSFA teamed up again this year and in UniSFA's infinite wisdom they decided our theme should be 'PROSH is magic.' Y'know, like the ponies? Some notable costume choices were faeries, Gandalf if he loved hooping, Superman, Dan Heng from HSR, and 'fuck I didn't expect to be at PROSH, what stuff from the clubroom can I walk around with so it looks like I meant to be here?'. Overall it was a very fun evening and we look forward to supporting PROSH and their chosen charities again next year!
SNoM - Week 4, Sunday 23rd of March @ 11am
SNoM stands for 'Sunday Night of Magic,' and it is an event we hold every Sunday but we also sometimes schedule it properly and put out advertising for it. This was an advertised SNoM to continue fostering our new Magic players, and foster them we did, as we had an attendance of 15! I have a feeling we're going to need more booster boxes.
